Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How can my family swim at SPRA?
A: There are two ways to swim at SPRA.

  1. The first option is to purchase a one-time seasonal membership.  The Seasonal member is responsible for paying the annual dues for the selected summer. The current annual dues are $550. ($500 if paid by May 1) A family may take advantage of this summer option only one time. There is no other obligation to SPRA after the summer membership is used.
  2. The second option is to become a SPRA member. SPRA is made up of 350 family members.  As a member you are able to enjoy the benefits of SPRA for as long as you own that membership. You can sell your membership when you are no longer using the facility. In recent years SPRA has been at or near this 350 member capacity.

Q: Who is able to use the pool if I get a membership?
A:Provided your membership is current with no outstanding payments or annual dues, any member of your immediate family who resides at your address and who is listed as a dependant on your tax return may use the pool. These names should be listed on your registration form. Grandparents, babysitters, and nieces and nephews are examples of individuals who would NOT be included in your membership.

Q: Does the pool get crowded?
A: The number of memberships issued is limited to 350. The Board of Directors sets this limit and can only change that by a Board and/or membership vote. At this time it is believed that the size of the pool and grounds is big enough to accommodate 350 families comfortably.

Q: Can I bring a guest/guests to SPRA?
A: Guests may come to the pool with a member for a daily guest fee. The member must be present when their guest is at SPRA. Guests may not have unlimited access to the pool. They may visit SPRA a limited number of times per summer.  Refer to guest fee policies for details.

Q: How much does a membership cost?
A: The price of a membership, which must be bought from another member varies. The sale price is at the discretion of the seller and must be agreed upon by both seller and buyer before any transaction may take place. In recent years memberships have been selling for $1,350.

Q: Once I purchase a membership, are there other costs?
A: Each year the owner/members of SPRA are required to pay their annual membership dues. These dues, which are decided upon annually by the Board of Directors, are billed to the members in April. SPRA members with unpaid dues will not be permitted to use the pool until the fees are paid. Swimming lessons, swim team, and other items like food and beverage are extra.

Q: Why do people charge different prices when selling their membership?
A: When someone is selling a SPRA membership they have owned it for many years and have enjoyed the membership for several summers.  Many of these people have grown children or they are leaving the State College area. Often they feel that they have “gotten their money’s worth” out of the membership and would simply like to get something back for their investment. They may choose to sell their membership for whatever price they feel is appropriate. When purchasing a membership from an individual it must be paid in full. More motivated sellers may sell their membership for less.

Q: Can I make payments on my SPRA membership?
A: Memberships sold from member to new-member must be paid in full. An option to pay over time is only extended to buyers who are purchasing a membership from someone who is already paying over time. At one time SPRA had to assess members in order to pay for a major repair. At that time there was an option to pay over time. Only these memberships, which are already on a payment schedule, may continue to make payments on that schedule.
